Today I went to see “The Lion King 3D” with my younger sister.  We made a quick decision and ran out of the house, catching the show right before it started.  There was a family with 4 kids in the audience and one of the children’s reactions was one of the best parts of the film experience.   When Zazu tells Simba and Nala that they will be married when they grow up, the characters say “ewwwww” which, seeing the movie before, I knew was coming.  I did not however expect to hear a third “ewwww” coming from one of the children in the audience.  I wish one of the writers of the film were in the audience at that moment just to hear that reaction, it was priceless.

I have seen this film countless times as a child, because it was my older sisters favorite movie.  Not having seen it since I was maybe 12, I didn’t realize how amazing this film actually was.  As a child I didn’t understand the comedy but now watching it as…oh my goodness…an adult, the film is hilarious.

“The Lion King” was directed by Roger Allers and Rob Minkoff and written by Irene Mecchi and Jonathan Roberts (along with 27 others).  The film has a wonderful cast including; James Earl Jones, Matthew Broderick, Jeremy Irons, Whoopi Goldberg and Jonathan Taylor Thomas.  The film is a Disney animated adventure comedy.  I’m really hoping everyone knows the story of “The Lion King” (if not go see it in theatres now!) but just in case, here is a summary; it is the story of Hamlet.  But actually, “The Lion King” is about Simba, the air to the thrown and the obstacles and struggles he must go through to become King.  There are many very important characters in this film; Mufasa, Zazu, Nala, Timon, Pumba but Simba would be the protagonist.

This film is experience driven, we follow Simba from when he was a baby until he is fully-grown and becomes king.  His experiences with his father, uncle and Timon and Pumba move the story forward.  A key scene in this film is when Simba has just run away and he is lying in the desert.  Timon and Pumba find him surrounded by vultures.  In this scene, because Simba is passed out, we cannot tell if he is dead or alive.  Pumba finally says that he’s alive but this withholding of information keeps the audience in suspense.

An action that moves the story forward would be during “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” when Nala kisses Simba.  This kiss shows the audience both Nala’s and Simba’s feelings towards each other.  Some dialogue that not only moves the story forward but also builds character is the scene between Simba and Scar.  Scar tells Simba about the elephant graveyard where he has been told not to go.  This scene shows that Simba is gullible and wants to be brave and also shows that Scar is evil and trying to get rid of Simba.  Because of this conversation, Simba goes to the graveyard and is almost killed before his father saves him.

The film has a clear beginning middle and end.  We start with Simba as a baby and a cub until his father is killed.  The middle begins once Simba meets the amazing duo, Timon and Pumba and we follow his life with them.  The end begins when Nala finds Simba and he finally realizes he must return to Pride Rock.  The end of the film, like many Disney…actually any Disney film, is a happy and satisfying ending.

Also the transformation from VHS to 3D animation, WOW, it is amazing.  I know I wouldn’t have noticed the quality as a child but seeing both versions of it, the 3D version is very impressive.

Anyways, if you’ve never seen “The Lion King” go see it in theatres as soon as possible, it won’t be out for much longer.  And even if you have seen it, go spend the 14 dollars, it will bring you back to your child hood…very nostalgic and very worth it.
